Holmatro Rescue Tool
On Thursday June 12, 2003, Fairfield Fire and EMS took
delivery of a Holmatro Combination tool (cutter/spreader),
portable power unit, and a hydraulic Ram. This new system
replaces the antiquated oil over hydraulic system that
has been in service for many years. To help subsidize
the cost a grant was written, submitted, and ultimately
approved by the Robert C. Hoffman Charitible Endowment
Trust.
Over the course of the past 12 months, 3 major manufacturers
of rescue tools have provided us with hands-on demonstrations
of their various combination tools. Two additional demonstrations,
one for each of the two tools liked the most by attendees,
were provided to solidify the decision.
The new tool has many benefits over our previous system.
Portability- the unit is powered via a lightweight (35
pounds!) portable power unit powered by a small gasoline
engine. This means that the tool and operator are not
tethered to the apparatus. Forcible entry, Rapid Intervention
Teams, and awkward rescues can now utilize the benefits
of a powered rescue tool. Ease of use The combination
of its light weight, size, and "switch" mechanism
(twist-grip) make the tool easier to use and much less
fatiguing, especially during extended periods of use.
The addition of the hydraulic Ram to Fairfields
equipment will also prove to be a valuable asset in
many extrication situations. Hydraulic Rams are utilized
predominantly in situations where "rolling the
dash" or pushing the dashboard of a vehicle up
and away from a trapped victim is required.
