From Left to Right: Chief Kevin Koons, Ed Kane, Chief Don Dominick, Lieutenant Dave Millstein, EMS Captain Neal Abrams

In May of 2004, Chief Don Dominick of the Northfield Township Fire Department in Michigan, was severely injured while riding his motorcycle on Iron Springs Road in Fairfield. Fairfield Fire and EMS was assisted by Fountaindale Fire Company, Medic 28, Blue Ridge Summit Fire Company, and Stat Medevac. Upon arrival, BLS assumed patient care and found multiple injuries ranging from a broken humerus and foot to an unstable pelvis and broken femur. Chief Dominick remained amazingly calm during the incident and was able to map out his injuries for the providers. The calm and professional manner of Chief Dominick was both a great help to the providers, but also created an eerie scene due to the extent of his injuries and his calm demeanor. The need for air medical was recognized immediately and a landing zone was established several miles away at Blue Ridge Summit Fire Department.

The pt was transported via air medical to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. After several days he was flown to the University of Michigan Hospital, still listed in "Critical" condition. On May 17, 2004, his condition was upgraded to "Serious" and then to "Stable" on May 26, 2004. Chief Dominick was finally released from the hospital on June 18, 2004.

On May 27, 2005, Chief Dominick returned to the Fairfield area and met with some of the members who had been present at the incident. We stood in amazement as the Chief talked about rehabilitation and showed us pictures of x-rays following his multiple surgeries. Later he returned to Iron Springs Road to visit the accident scene.

"(I wish to extend my) sincere appreciation to all involved with my care. Thanks for the opportunity to continue my life. It is great to walk and move around again! Each time we treat a patient, regardless of how we think they are doing, miracles do happen. The care and professionalism demonstrated by everyone shall be remembered forever."
