The 2004 Adams County Volunteer Emergency Services Association
(ACVESA) annual convention will be held August 5th
7th. On Saturday August 7th, an Emergency Services Day
will be held at the new Emergency Training Center off
of Granite Station Road in Gettysburg, PA. Following
with the initiative of the Company leadership and the
assistance of government leaders in Carroll Valley,
we were able to arrange a sprinkler demonstration trailer.

Rescue Institute (MFRI) and will hold multiple demonstrations
on the effectiveness of sprinklers in the event of a
fire. Experts will be available for questions and additional
information.

16, 2004 - Safe and Sane Car Wash (Update)
Fairfield
Fire and EMS is working closely with the Fairfield High
School Safe and Sane project as a part of our continued
Public Safety and Wellness initiative. On Saturday,
June 5th. Fairfield High School Safe/Sane* student
volunteers will hold a car wash at Fairfield Fire and
EMS (106 Steelman Street) from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Proceeds/donations from patrons will be used to support
the second annual Safe/Sane after graduation lock-in
party. Please stop by and support our local area youth
with this important fund raising event!
*Safe/Sane is a concept successfully used by many other
local area schools to help promote community awareness
and participation in helping keep local youths safe
by providing an alternative to end-of-year graduation
parties where drugs or alcohol may be present. On a
larger scale, Safe/Sane sends a clear message not only
at graduation time, but all throughout the year that
the community is involved with their youth and that
safety and fun are not mutually exclusive.
May
6, 2004 - Garage Fire
Around 2:30 in the morning a garage fire next to a structure
was dispatched in the 2-5 box area. A full box alarm
was dispatched sending crews from Fairfield, Emmitsburg,
MD, and Fountaindale. Engine Rescue 2 was the first
to arrive on the scene to find a multiple car garage
fully involved with the residence as an immediate exposure
hazard. Two handlines were used, one to protect the
exposure and the second to attack the garage. Crews
brought the fire under control in less than half an
hour. The fire consumed two vehicles and a boat as well
as the rest of the contents in the garage.
May 5, 2004 - Residential Sprinkler Presentation
For the past several months Fairfield Fire and EMS has
been working closely with the Vigilant Hose Company
in Emmitsburg, MD regarding the presentation of materials
regarding residential and commercial sprinklers for
our communities. In late May/early June, Fairfield will
be hosting two speakers, Jim Dalton and Chuck Burkell,
who has installed sprinklers in his own home twice.
The presentations will cover what to consider in a sprinkler
ordinance and how to confront the leadership challenges
we'll face as pockets of resistance begin to surface.
This event will be open to the public as well as the
leaders of our community, especially those concerned
with developing the building codes for our area. We
will update the date and time when it is scheduled.

April
6, 2004 - "Fun Night"
Fairfield members train every Tuesday evening throughout
the year. Our members are also constantly taking courses
outside of our own facility. This results in hundreds
of training hours throughout the year. Breaking away
from the normal routine on Tuesday April 6th, we decided
to host a BBQ and a trip to Sander's Square for ice
cream. Our thanks to Sander's Square for staying open
for nearly two dozen members! The night was finished
with a simple lay-out scenario from a hydrant in town.

evening when a medical call sent Engine 1-2 and 2A out
shortly after 6 PM. Later in the evening a 2 alarm structure
fire put them all to work again! We are grateful for
your assistance!

21, 2004 - Structure Fire
Four
firefighters, a set of irons, two handlights, and a
pressurized-water extinguisher were used to extinguish
a fire on Apache Trail. Units were dispatched for a
structure fire and arrived on the scene to find the
road impassable due to a large 1/2 mile long icy hill.
The crew from Engine/Rescue 2 made the trek on foot
to find the fire had been mostly extinguished by the
homeowner. The fire damaged about 20 square feet of
siding and burned through some structural material.
The quick-thinking of the homeowner turned a possible
catastrophe into minor damage to the exterior and some
smoke in the attic.

10-11, 2004 - 11 Members Receive Surface Ice Rescue
Technician Level Training
During
the coldest weekend the area has seen this year, 11
members of Fairfield Fire and EMS were on the ice in
Lake Meade. In a class hosted by the Lake Meade Fire
Department and instructed by Lifeguard Systems, our
members learned how to assess and handle surface ice
rescue scenarios. Over the two-day course, various techniques
were learned, practiced, and finally used when the teams
performed rescues on each other through the ice on Lake
Meade. All 11 members from Fairfield Fire and EMS achieved
the Technician Level of training meaning that they are
all certified to perform the on-ice rescue techniques
required to rescue a victim fallen through the ice.
In addition, two members, Joe Junker and Jeff Kane achieved
the "Fly Crew" status by demonstrating their
ability to rescue 3 victims within a 10 minute period
of time. These members are: Bobby Fitez, Joe Junker,
Jeff Kane, Kevin Koons, Jim Phillips, Dave Millstein,
Adam Jacobs, Ben Jacobs, Bill Jacobs, Sean Jones, and
Adam Brown. Gallery
