22, 2003 - Structure Fire
At
23:49 Fairfield Fire and EMS was dispatched for a reported
structure fire. Engine/Rescue-2 was the first unit on
the scene with heavy fire showing through the roof and
an automatic second alarm was requested. The initial
attack was defensive with 2 handlines from the exterior,
also protecting the exposed residence on side D. The
fire was fully extinguished around 2:15 and units cleared
the scene at 3:32. Fairfield Fire and EMS was assisted
by: Carroll County Engine/Tanker-11, Frederick County
Engine/Tanker-64, Engine-63, and Tower-6, Adams County
Company 3, Adams County Company 4, and Adams County

21, 2003 - Vehicle Fire
Ambulance
2A1 was dispatched to a vehicle fire in the Fountaindale
area along Route 16 and Old Waynesboro Pike. 2A1 arrived
to find a sport utility vehicle fully involved. The
crew used a Dry Chemical extinguisher and a 5 gallon
water jug for the unit's misting fan to knock the fire
down. The fire was finally extinguished and overhauled
by crews from Fountaindale and Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Engine Rescue 2 was dispatched but placed in service
before arriving at the scene.

8, 2003 - Structure Fire w/ Possible Entrapment
Engine
Rescue 2 was dispatched on a first alarm assignment
to Emmitsburg, Maryland for an apartment building fire.
Several other Adams County Companies were dispatched
to the scene as part of the first alarm and subsequent
Task Force. Units arrived to find fire on the second
floor and attic showing through the roof. The fire was
controlled in less than an hour and crews on scene overhauled
until released around 1:30 AM.

7, 2003 - Vehicle Accident
Several
minutes past 4:00 AM on Friday morning, a single vehicle
accident caused Fairfield, Cashtown and part of Buchanan
Valley to lose power. The single vehicle with a single
occupant lost control on Carroll's Tract Road, struck
a telephone pole, spun several times, and rolled, finally
landing in an upright position in the middle of the
roadway. Fairfield was assisted by Medic 28.

31, 2003 - Building Collapse
A
midmorning construction accident was dispatched as a
building collapse. Units arrived to find a patient on
the ground below a collapsed roof, but clear of debris.
The patient was flown to a trauma center via Life Lion
helicopter. Company 2 was assisted by Medic 28 and Life
Lion.

26, 2003 - Garage Fire
At
8:30 AM on Sunday morning a full structure alarm was
sounded for a garage fire on Carroll's Tract Road. A
local career firefighter noticed the smoke when passing-by
and used a garden hose to dampen the seat of the fire.
Engine-Rescue 2 arrived to find a two story dwelling
with an attached garage and light smoke showing. A single
handline was put into service as the crew entered the
garage and rapidly extinguished the fire. The fire was
contained to the garage. One cat and one bird were rescued
from the residence. Fairfield was assisted by units
from Gettysburg and Cashtown.

9, 2003 - Fairfield Fire and EMS hosts Kindergarten
for Fire Prevention Week
Nearly
100 Kindergarten students from Fairfield toured the
station and equipment as well as received a presentation
on fire safety and a visit from Smokey the Bear as part
of Fire Prevention Week.

11, 2003 - Fairfield Fire and EMS Remembers the Victims
of
9-11-01
Our
Company, Our Community, Our Country, remembers the 2,792
victims lost on September 11, 2001. Our hearts are with
you and your families.
September
9, 2003 - Fairfield Fire and EMS Rescues Cat from Roof
A
resident of Carroll Valley phoned the department the
evening of September 9th requesting assistance to retrieve
their cat that was stranded on the roof of their home.
Engine/Rescue-2 with a full crew responded and surveyed
the scene. A 24' ladder was raised to the peak of the
roof and Jim Phillips with assistance from Jeff Kane
brought the cat back down to safety and a very thankful
owner.

25, 2003 - Fairfield Fire and EMS Donates Equipment
to Helping Our Own
In
order to make room for the arrival of fitness equipment
as part of the Fire Act Grant, a large amount of old
equipment was donated to an organization that assists
Fire/EMS departments that are not nearly as fortunate
as those in our area. Most of the old equipment was
from our old function hall, consisting of grills, fryers,
and other miscellaneous equipment that would serve to
help departments in need. Helping Our Own provides aid
to U.S. department that have under a $15,000 annual

25, 2003 - Fairfield Fire and EMS Softball Team finishes
3rd in Adams County Tournament
With
fourteen teams starting games early in the morning on
Saturday, July 25, three teams survived until the last
two games. Fairfield players came together as a team
and played fantastic softball, losing to Littlestown
by one run in the second to last game to place third
in the tournament. In the final game, Littlestown succumb
to Brushtown, taking second place. Congratulations to
the team!

23, 2003 - Ice Rescue Suit utilized in flooded basement
On
May 16, 2003, many area fire departments were busy with
flooded roadways and basements due to several days of
heavy rain. Fairfield Fire and EMS was dispatched to
a residence in Carroll Valley, PA for several feet of
water in the basement. Utilizing one of Fairfield's
Ice Rescue suits, we gained access to the basement and
began pump operations.
June
12, 2003 - Holmatro Rescue Tool
On Thursday June 12, 2003, Fairfield Fire and EMS took
delivery of a Holmatro Combination tool (cutter/spreader),
portable power unit, and a hydraulic Ram. This new system
replaces the antiquated oil over hydraulic system that
has been in service for many years. To help subsidize
the cost a grant was written, submitted, and ultimately
approved by the Robert C. Hoffman Charitible Endowment

2003 - Horton Comes to Fairfield
The Fairfield Fire and EMS proudly announces the arrival
of one of the finest Emergency Medical Response vehicles
available today. A brand new HORTON Model 553B ambulance
has arrived for driver training and radio installation.
Prior to being placed in service however, the finishing
touches such as decals and equipment stocking must be
completed. more >

31, 2003 - Fairfield Fire and EMS participated in
a Multi-Casualty Incident (MCI) training drill conducted
by the Adams County Emergency Management
Agency and Gettysburg Hospital. Approximately 30 minutes
after the start of the drill, the situation turned into
real rescue when a participating firefighter fell through
a roof. The victim received immediate care by EMT's
and Paramedics and was transported via Ambulance 2A-1
to the established landing zone for Life Lion. Photographs
