January 10-11, 2004
Surface Ice Rescue Technician

During the coldest weekend the area has seen this year, 11 members of Fairfield Fire and EMS were on the ice in Lake Meade. In a class hosted by the Lake Meade Fire Department and instructed by Lifeguard Systems, our members learned how to assess and handle surface ice rescue scenarios. Over the two-day course, various techniques were learned, practiced, and finally used when the teams performed rescues on each other through the ice on Lake Meade. All 11 members from Fairfield Fire and EMS achieved the Technician Level of training meaning that they are all certified to perform the on-ice rescue techniques required to rescue a victim fallen through the ice. In addition, two members, Joe Junker and Jeff Kane achieved the "Fly Crew" status by demonstrating their ability to rescue 3 victims within a 10 minute period of time. These members are: Bobby Fitez, Joe Junker, Jeff Kane, Kevin Koons, Jim Phillips, Dave Millstein, Adam Jacobs, Ben Jacobs, Bill Jacobs, Sean Jones, and Adam Brown.

Adams County Mass Casualty Drill

Fairfield Fire and EMS participated in a Multi-Casualty Incident (MCI) training drill conducted by the Adams County Emergency Management Agency and Gettysburg Hospital. Approximately 30 minutes after the start of the drill, the situation turned into real rescue when a participating firefighter fell through a roof. The victim received immediate care by EMT's and Paramedics and was transported via Ambulance 2A-1 to the established landing zone for Life Lion.

At the request of a local homeowner who recently had a fire in a small barn, Fairfield Fire and EMS prepared a training session developed to provide some live fire experience for some of our new and junior members.

Handline training, pump training

A local business requested a wash-down of their parking area. The opportunity was used to further familiarize some of our younger members with handline control and teamwork. We also spent some time on pump training on Tanker 2 and Engine 2-1.
